Describe it in 20 words 1960s-flavoured debut solo album from former Superdrag lead singer and multi-instrumentalist, John Davis, containing ballads and blues songs.
Big Themes/Standout Tracks There seem to be two types of songs on this album: quiet ones, most of which sound like they could have been written by Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys), and loud ones, which have a gospel-blues flavour. My favourites are the loud ones, which include "Tear Me Apart" and the foot-tapping "Have Mercy".
Anything that lets it down Is this meant to be a tribute album to the sixties greats, or something that draws inspiration from them but tries to present something original? The CD is refreshingly different and more mature than most Christian CDs, but the tracks that sound like other artists unfortunately suffer by comparison. Brian Wilson is a musical genius, and anything that attempts to sound like him can only hope to be second-best.
Who it sounds like If you were to put Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys), John Lennon and Bob Dylan into a bowl and stir them together - adding some Christian lyrics on the way - then you would probably get a CD sounding like this.
Rating *** Good effort
